From Nightshifters:

One doesn’t expect to speak about clocks when it comes to club music. “Master Of Complication” the new Ep by Canblaster, is a concept record about time, speed and, well, the complexity of watches. Of course there are many things about the music of Canblaster that is not what you expect. First of all, his music is ultra-melodic with an almost Zen like use of melodies that lifts you right off the ground. Then there’s the everything-including-the-kitchen-sink beats filled with details that always seem to point outward to an even larger world.

But we’re getting ahead of ourselves, let us introduce you to Canblaster, aka Cédric Steffens, he’s from Northern France and he’s part of the Club Cheval crew that’s currently storming the scene. He’s only 22 but his unique ability to combine genres and sounds belie wisdom beyond his years. “Master Of Complication” is his first for Nightshifters and, to be honest, it’s so full of new noises we’re not really sure how to describe it.

“Clockworks”, the slowest track (132bpm), kicks it all off with a soaring melody of reverberant House stabs and ticking watch beats. One notch faster is “Triple Ring” (140bpm) with probably the catchiest vocal hook of the year! It’s a UK-influenced club smash like no other! Sure, people could call “Lost In The Shell” (160bpm) a juke/footwork styled tune, but they’d be overlooking all the other music smashing – it’s the hardest song of the lot and guaranteed to start fights! The release ends with “Timemaster’s Chronicles” (180bpm), a thrillingly progressive tune that remains true to the Ep’s R&B tinged spirit while hinting at every other musical genre in existence. Really!

In addition to 4 completely amazing original tracks, we have 4 completely amazing remixes. French superstars Para One & Teki Latex team up for one of their best remixes ever on “Clockworks”, a time-crushing fusion of synths past and present with added Robotic vocals. We’re proud to debut one of our new artists as well – Magnum takes “Triple Ring” and cuts it with superbly with breaks and a ton of atmosphere. Jubilee takes the same track to Miami, adds a touch of acid, and lets that bass boom! Bambounou takes “Timemaster’s Chronicles” and completely reconfigures it as a steamy northern UK bass masterpiece from the future!

Canblaster is also the first of a next generation of producers we’re proud to be working with. Together with Magnum (he’s next), Distal and Talk, they are a new generation of producers that are pushing the limits in a big way.

I had a little chat with my new labelmate TALK who just dropped his debut release, the “Holy Mountain” EP on Nightshifters. His approach to club music is dark and futuristic, where a hybrid juxtaposition of rhythms and genres with cinematic moods, deep basslines and interlocking drums are the common denominator. I relate to him in his concepts and production styles and am real hyped by tracks like “Walking Disease” and the title track “Holy Mountain”. I must say that I am really enjoying the new weird, club music grind and it’s refreshing vibe, and the IDM nostalgia I am getting from it. If you acknowledge the future like we do, you should get acquainted with TALK and the Nightshifters gang. Read the interview, watch the video, grab the freebie and buy the release:

Yo! Lets Talk!

Give us a little background about yourself… Who is Talk, where is he
from, what are his motivations and and what is he trying to do or
communicate through his music?

My motivation is to warp peoples minds. I am honestly into the darker side of things, so, maybe I’m conveying that simply by the way I make music?

Where does the pseudonym Talk come from?

Before i started going to raves, clubs and listening to dance music, I was in a heavy metal band called PARANOID. We had a song about people that never shut up. It was called TALK. I took the name because i felt there were people surrounding me at the time that only wanted to dream and i felt extremely frustrated by this and thats where it came from.. so instead of talking about it.. I just did it??? I know.. I know…..

When did you get started in production and DJing?

I got started when I was 18, a best friend of mine taught me how to use a step sequencer. I started making electro and “french” house under TALK in 2008. I started DJing a year later under the same name.

What moved you to do so?

When I was falling out of the punk / metal scene, as it was super small and childish, and the music just didn’t touch me anymore, I started to hang with a friend who has gone through several EDM aliases, Permanent Trips, Sioux Spur, Low Rez, and now he goes by SLOWHEAD. He was into everything i was into, but then he showed me Autechre, and dubstep producers like Benga, N-Type and Burial. It was his fault, him and another friend of mine, Chris Griffin, that showed me how to work Fruity Loops. It was nothing more than a new, different and constructive way to express something that guitars and drums and screaming just wasn’t doing anymore.

As for DJing, my friends and I would always make the two hour drive to Atlanta to go to parties, and we just eventually got tired of the rough drive home and said fuck it, lets throw our own party here and do our own thing, in Tennessee. I guess I saw it as an avenue to do something bigger than just being in a band that will just break up. With DJing and producing, its all about one person, which is great for me… I get impatient working with other people on music.

Do you play any instruments?

I have been playing the guitar since I was 5 years old. I can learn songs very quickly by ear. I don’t read music. Other than that, i can play the piano and drums a little bit.

Are there any other musical projects you have worked on now or in the past?

Yes. I was briefly in a neo folk / shoe gaze group called Modes of Vibration. We made two songs then stopped. It was just very tedious to record the acoustic guitar with the step sequencer. I am about to start recording project by myself and maybe one other person called The Hunger, which will be more in the vein of Death in June and Lycia.
When i first heard your Canblaster Remix I was blown away and your
debut EP “Holy Mountain” is out there! How would you describe your
sound and style?

Aggressive, dark, deep, bass heavy. The Canblaster remix was happy, refined and future garage influenced, but that was a different time and place in life. Don’t expect more of that. Then again, who knows, I may decide I want to do more of that sound. I would say its a mixture of eating alot of psychedelic drugs, and listening to dark music. Simultaneously or apart from each other.

What is your musical background and influences?

Dancing people in pitch black rooms, lazers, hallucinogenics, horror films, the occult, being awake when the sun comes up, and just being a fucking weirdo. I seriously love the feeling I get when I walk inside of a club and the DJ is playing super fucked techno, there are no lights on, no one is talking and its like the whole world stopped giving a fuck. Thats what I want. I will say that at 14 I was very, very into the Cure and since then have gotten more into that whole sound.

What music do you listen to regularly? What are your likings?

Lately I have been very into gothic/industrial bands like Fields of the Nephilim, Rome, Party Asylum, Ministry, Front 242, Death in June, Coldreams, Blessure Grave, Lycia, Sisters of Mercy. I am a big Michael Jackson fan. I also really enjoy Morgan Louis from Rhode Island, his mixtape “Forever” is probably my favorite dj mix ever. Smoother house and disco like Space Dimension Controller, Frankie Knuckles, Chymera, Lifelike, Pepe Bradock, Nicolas Jaar, Azari + 3. The new Girl Unit and Velour are both amazing.

What’s the scene like back home?

I would say I really appreciate what DISTAL, my new labelmate, is doing for Atlanta. He is breaking new grounds in dubstep, as well as his record label is doing great things with their footwork/future bass night, ROYAL. The scene is healthy. The whole south east is a little bit more wild, so when my friends from bigger cities come to play, they always have a very interesting time and am glad they played my party that I throw in Tennessee. The kids down here really appreciate heavy bass music. They don’t know what to call it as long as its “got that real deep sub bass.” I can’t complain, my monthly draws 500 — 1000 people. We’ve been fortunate enough to bring people like JUBILEE, DEATHFACE, ROB THREEZY and FLUFFTRONIX to our party so, I’d say our scene is healthy. Its no Europe tho!

What are you producing on and what techniques or tips could you share with us?

I have been using a mixture of Garageband, Logic Pro and Fruity Loops. I honestly would say my only suggestion is, keep your drum patterns interesting. I hate simplistic sounding drums. Also, delay is my favorite.

What’s the best show experience you’ve had? What’s the worst? You dont
have to name names… hehe

The best show experience i’ve had so far would have to be playing to 1,400 people at my monthly a couple years ago. That was probably the biggest feeling ever, aside from playing Cinespace in LA or just being in San Fransisco was awesome, the people there have alot of fun no matter what you throw at them.

Worst dj set was going to a club thinking i’ll just wing it on rack mount cdjs. i train wrecked every mix and the whole crowd went up stairs to the second floor where there was another party going on. Always go with your intuition when its “better to just rent cdjs.”

What are your current plans and goals? Past accomplishments?

Now that the EP is released, I am now working on my next release. Its going to be called “NOCTURNAL.” All I can say is it is less 4 to the floor, and more about spacing things out and being more minimalistic, mixing dubstep and techno. I honestly am just really ready to tour more and get my sound out to parties and clubs, I don’t think theres enough weird sounding djs out there, just the same cookie cutter shit.
Aside from that, I am trying to start up a feel good music night at a gay bar here, have recently picked Magic the Gathering back up and am contemplating going to school for design and music marketing. I’m very young so I have alot of free time.

Where do you see electronic music going in the future? What are you
expectations?

I know the cyclical way that dance music changes through out the years and why, but at this point who knows. I look up to the people actually not giving a shit, and making weird, interesting and sometimes dark / challenging music and i feel that THAT is where this whole club / dance / bass music thing needs to go. Alot of the “huge” producers sound like they seriously came up with their famous “hits” in five fucking minutes. I guess thats why you don’t see me making alot of up lifting, happy tunes, because that’s too easy for me. I wanna see dance music take a left turn for something weird, primal and dark.

Last words, shout outs?

Go check out the BURNING ALIVE video that DJ Donna Summer made!! Also, go purchase the Holy Mountain EP and get ready for more remixes and releases in 2011!

Dutty Artz will be releasing the NEW YORK TROPICAL COMPILATION on November 9, featuring La Ola Criminal – Sin Gas, an instrumental I am releasing under my urban/lol/reggaeton-ish project, La Ola Criminal. The compilation will also feature: Lamin Fofana, Kingdom (flipping RITA INDIANA), Matt Shadetek, DJ Rupture, Chief Boima, DJ Orion, Sonora, Salem, Knight Magic & Maga Bo… Pretty fucking solid. Here you have it in Tally’s own words:

We are dropping a 12 track tropical compilation just in time for when things start to get cold in New York and hot in Rio. Ten unreleased TROPICAL tunes + anthemic FUNKY THAT WE HAD TO COSIGN and A HEAVYWEIGHT NEW MASTER OF NGUZUNGUZU’s EL BEBE AMBIENTE. We feel bad that we have not kept up our LEGENDARY New York Tropical parties- but we just do not have time to promote a crew club night in New York- but maybe again in the future, with some good partners we would get into it again- because NEW YORK TROPICAL WAS A FUCKING BLESSING. The first time I went was before I had really started working with DA and everything about it was perfect. From the German installation art that slowly dissolved as the dancefloor spread to all surfaces, to the perfect Sangria, the heavy weight dancehall soundsytem that we rented from SoundMan Grimm, a crowd that reflected the diversity of the music…. basically NYT was one of the dopest party series I’ve ever taken part in (although sadly I never got to play caus I was busy learning things in school and hanging out in Europe).

For the comp we hooked up with DA resident internet excavator Seacrest Cheadle 892 u mean computer mean2 computer did u mean competitor a force that has been so next level for so long that it is basically my only internet news source. We have been dreaming of doing projects with him/it/her/zee since before the first .com crash but he’s basically the zeitgeist embodied and besides pretty regular appearances at Korea Town Karaoke Bars and Neurogenetic labs in undisclosed locations- she is damn near impossible to locate. but somewhere in the #based ether we convinced it them 2 make a deadline… and magically, it worked.

Our promo machine is at about cotton gin status at this point… so we just moving FWD looking towards a more cohesive way to reach a larger audience. I dont open or listen to almost any of the promo email I get, and you dont either. But some of it will keep coming but really this whole thing is about relationships. I, for one, am working on my relationship to the ocean and fresh fruit juice in Brazil. I suggest you keep a dream journal while you ask these questions.

There are also tracks on this compilation from important and soon to be important musicians like Lamin Fofana, Kingdom (flipping RITA INDIANA OMFG!), Matt Shadetek, DJ /Rupture, Chief Boima, DJ Orion, Sonora, Salem, Knight Magic, La Ola Criminal, Maga Bo.

Tracks will be sold digitally via Hulk Share and on custom GuccixDuttyArtz all-over-print USB sticks

Joyful music for an expensive, shitty city with decaying infrastructure where DUTTY ARTZ lives & loves.

RT:PLZ

We’re big fans of this Puerto Rico native, turned New York transplant. Ever since he came down to DC in May of 09 and played almost an entire set of originals, he’s been heavy on our radar. Last year he teamed up wtih the Tighten UP! crew on his remix of Illy’s Double on the Rocks project, “Thats My Steez.” And was recently featured on Tighten UP! Podcast 4.

So how did you get your start DJ’ing?

I guess it all started when I heard drum & bass for the first time back in 2000 (kind of late I know). I was absolutely blown away. The energy, the sound design. Everything. I didn’t really know how to go about it… I just wanted to make music like that… Somehow. Had a friend who was into promoting parties and knew about this stuff. He recommended I start out DJing first, and then I would pick up on the musical and production skills. Bought a cheap pair of turntables and a mixer, bunch of records, and got to practicing. Played a few small parties for some time, then I took a break to focus on making music for a while. I picked up DJing again around 2008, when I finally jumped from drum & bass to house, electro, etc.

Favorite Jello flavor?

Orange

You’ve played in Puerto Rico quiet a bit, what do you find is the difference between there and the states?

PR has a surprisingly active party scene with lots of great, high profile acts dropping by all the time. It’s an island of course and most of the scene concentrates around the capital, so all in all it’s a handful of local people running things and playing most of the parties along with the bigger names. It’s a tight knit scene so once word spreads that you’re doing good work, especially on the production front, and getting outside recognition, it’s easier to get a variety of consistent gigs. But its not a walk in the park either. You have to put in your work and pay your dues like anywhere else. Here in the states things feel more spread out. Lots of promoters, companies, DJs, producers, etc all trying to do their own thing, so it ends up being a little nerve-racking at times… Until you get one or two tracks that really blow up and put you on the map. I’m working on that heh.

GI Joes or Transformers?

teenage mutant ninja turtles

Favorite track or Remix you’ve done so far?

Probably the last two tracks I finished as Deathwave
Deathwave – Pancake

Deathwave – Jack Her (Til She Screams)

Your stuck on an island, and you can only bring 3 DVD’s to watch for the next 3 years. What do you bring?

Anchorman
Blade Runner
Scarface (I know it’s a cliche but goddamn I always loved that flick)

What can you tell us about your new project “Deathwave”?

I’ve kind of been focusing most of my energy into Deathwave lately. I’m using this project to experiment with darker, heavier tracks. The Nathan Vice thing will continue to draw from 80?s soundtracks, new wave, italo, disco, rock, etc. while Deathwave will include a broader range of influences like acid house, techno, drum & bass, hip hop, funk, tropical stuff, and whatever else. I’m not really limiting myself with it. No set rules. Just an emphasis on big bass, dark, raw, gritty vibes, and getting people to break a sweat on the dancefloor.

A Magnum track recently made it to Mixtape Mondays on WeAreSkitzo.net mixed by Nightshifters label head DJ Donna Summer . Get to it:

DJ Donna Summer did a mix for Mixtape Mondays on WeAreSkitzo.net just out today. Like last week’s mix by I.D., he wrote a really great comment for the mix:

I’ve been feeling quite literate lately and have been wanting to get off the footpath a bit of late, so while there’s def some good club tunes in this mix, be warned it gets pretty arty. And why not? Sure there are mixes that are made for pre/post parties, dancing with friends and what not, but mostly I suspect people listen to them on their iPods while walking around or at a pretty quiet volume while they work. It’s a journey after all and maybe I have some story to tell.

As for the mix, it’s a bit of old and new with just a pinch of the random. It starts off with a collage of 3 tracks, 2 of them from the Sonic Youth side project Ciccone Youth and with a forthcoming new track on Nightshifters of one of our newest signings, Talk. From there it goes to a remix I made for Hostage, a great afro-pop influenced track by De?bruit, and another young act, NuJax, but then I get tricky throwing in a vintage Autchre track into an absolutely bizarre Christian Martin track- Ghosts. The rave shows back up with Magnum, a pretty sped up Nero-funk track by Mux Mool, a little touch of an old Dat Politics track then pretty much the entire “Revolting Jocks” track by the JOTS boys. Killer. From there we go back to 1990 and the always awesome “Hello Teenage America” from Meat Beat Manifesto’s incredible album 99%. We finish things off with another brand new producer, Distal from Atlanta, a touch of a freaked-out Morricone composition and then cap it off with the full version of “Tocatta” from Oslo’s Jaga Jazzist – a track that I always get lost in and also equally as inspired. – Jason Forrest aka DJ Donna Summer
